9:30  Capturing Outcomes of Targeted Antibiotic Stewardship Education to Clinical Pharmacists through the Creation of a Customized Electronic Documentation Form

  • Describe one strategy to capture outcomes of targeted antibiotic stewardship education for clinical pharmacists
  • Understand two types of antibiotic-related interventions that can increase as a result of targeted education to clinical pharmacists

  • List one negative effect of using antibiotics
  • Discuss the importance of obtaining a thorough antibiotic history during the medication reconciliation process

10:00   Preventing Controlled Substances Diversion Using a System-Wide FMEA Approach

  • Describe use of the FMEA process to assess vulnerability, review current safeguards and identify areas for enhancements

10:30  The Use of Single Dose IV Gentamicin for UTI in the Emergency Department

  • Describe three characteristics of aminoglycosides which make it attractive for single dose ED therapy of a UTI
  • Discuss the safety concerns of the use of high dose aminoglycoside therapy in pregnancy

  • Discuss the advantages of single dose IV aminoglycoside therapy versus multiple dose, multiple day oral antibiotic therapy in pregnancy
  • Discuss the safety concerns of the use of high dose aminoglycoside therapy in pregnancy

11:30  Antimicrobial Stewardship Update 

Rachel Fortin, PharmD, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Infectious Disease Clinical Pharmacist, Rhode Island Hospital

Pharmacist Objectives:

  • Discuss the role of a clinical pharmacist on an Antimicrobial Stewardship Team
  • Describe the requirements and timeline for implementation for the conditions of participation for Antimicrobial Stewardship outlined by CMS and TJC
  • Discuss the utility and feasibility of adopting a rapid diagnostic laboratory test to augment ASP activities

Pharmacy Technician Objectives:

  •  Identify the core elements of an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP)
  • Understand the requirements of participation for CMS and TJC regarding Antimicrobial Stewardship
  • Discuss implementation and use of a rapid diagnostic laboratory test to augment ASP activities
